JustPlay and Legend of the Five Rings.

Ritchie McAlley

We have some great offers on for the latest release from Fantasy Flight Games but first you might be wondering; why are we so excited for the release of Legend of the Five Rings (L5R)?

There would certainly be no JustPlay with out L5R. Playing this game was how Ritchie and Ian first met when playing would mean cramming upstairs in the Jacaranda Pub (the first place the Beatles played) as our local store back then was about the size of JustPlays Mezzanine floor! Along with our other now life-long friends that went drinking, our gaming nights built many firm friendships, a story you will hear from pretty much anyone who played this game back in the early days. Simply look at social media for #l5rhonored to see how much it means to others.

Ritchie, younger but still pushing the boundaries of what is ok to wear at card tournaments

A much more appropriately dressed Head Judge Ian.

We played all around Europe and at that time the group from Liverpool was known as a power house on the tournament scene. Pre-"netdecking" was when CCG's really shined, allowing your testing and dedication to really gain you the leverage you needed. Ritchie was playing to go 7-0 in the Swiss at one of the last UK Gencon's and his opponent did not even know what one of of his cards did (shame he knew in the final.) I think the highlight was putting 4 of us in the Top 16 of a 400+ player European Championship and 2 in the Top 8 but all it really boiled down to was a close group of friends playing week in and week out just like I see in our Destiny and Final Fantasy communities in store right now!

What are Living Card Games ?

"A Living Card Game® (LCG®) offers an innovative fixed distribution method that breaks away from the traditional Collectible Card Game model. While LCGs still offer the same dynamic, expanding, and constantly evolving game play that makes CCGs so much fun, they do away with the deterrent of the blind-buy purchase model that has burned out so many players. The end result is an innovative mix that gives you the best of both worlds!

The Core Set is the heart of a LCG. Each LCG’s Core Set is a completely self-contained game experience packed with content, including high-quality game pieces and immersive game aides designed to enhance play. Additionally, each Core Set contains multiple decks that provide an exciting and infinitely replayable game experience right out of the box.

While the LCG Core Sets provide a fantastic stand-alone game experience, those that wish to can expand even further! Monthly installments of expansion packs, each with a full playset of fixed cards, provide ongoing and regular additions to the available card pool. These expansion packs add customization, variety, and an ongoing sense of theme to your experiences with the game, while evolving the play environment in exciting new ways."

What this means to you buying into the game is that to have a complete play set (x3 of each card) you need three core games but only one of each expansion that follow on as they come complete and we have some great offers on for both of these!

We are doing a bundle for three copies of the L5R core game for just £99 saving more than 15% off RRP.

On top of this offer for just £10 you can reserve yourself a full play set of the core game (3 boxes) with a final payment of £89 on or before the day of release even pay it off monthly or weekly with our invoice system!

Order Via Deposit or buy all three copies in full here.

If you never want to worry about getting your hands on the latest releases and save an additional 5% on all expansions we have you covered.

If you subscribe to our L5R LCG subscription service we will order you in a copy of every release as they come available we will simply bill you as they are announced and all you have to do is pay on time to keep your additional 5% discount on all products.

We will be taking sign ups for this as the first expansions land.

There will be a launch event for 12 players who buy their core set from JustPlay if you have check out the event here and get your ticket

Thanks for reading if you any questions you can reach us via Facebook or mail us hello@justplaygames.uk

Warhammer 40,000 Fate of Konor Campaign!

Shaun Wright

Greetings loyal denizens of the Imperium!

We bring to you the happy news that the Warhammer 40,000 Campaign: The Fate of Konor is now officially underway and if you're to survive this apocalyptic clash of fates and prosper on the battlefield you're gonna need some good old fashioned Inquisitorial Intelligence on the matter.

The Fate of Konor campaign will span the following six weeks as of July 27th and will see the entire world take part in a vast campaign to decide the fate of Konor and it's surrounding planets. Each week will bring a new planet to claim in the name of the Imperium (or Eldar Gods, Machine Spirits, Gork and Mork or insert latest fashionable warp deity here) and will bring with it a new weekly mission and even some snazzy new stratagem cards for fighting on that planet.

Each battles results will be submitted by the store to the worldwide campaign as the battles rage on and each will contribute to the fate of the planet currently fought on. Whether its wielding a chainsword or firing a battle cannon, every action both great and small will have an effect on the fight for these planets. To really claim the planet as your own each week will also have a thematic reward scheme. Play with the relevant weekly scheme and your victory will bear twice the weight in the campaign results. As seen below our first week will focus on the Space Marines/Start Collecting boxes to help along those who are joining the battlefield with a fresh new force. Each week will offer new challenges and reward those willing to field a diverse, lethal force to the fight.

Whilst we have a changing battlefield and scenario each week, there is also a large hobby element to the defense of Konor. As any General knows, an army relies on a strong and efficient supply line, and as such adding new forces each week will count towards the relevant army's war effort and will furthermore tick the relevant painting box on the other side of our new Konor sheets, working towards some of the prizes we have in store.

Since we've mentioned prizes it's only fair that we should show the spoils of war up for grabs. Taking part in a weekly game, reinforcing your army with newly painted units and taking part in some of the events we have in store will bag you all sorts of goodies such as wound markers, objective tokens, wristbands and embroidered dice bags. The spoils of war are definitely sweet in the 41st millenium.

The defense of Konor is vital for the Imperium and a strong foothold for it's enemies so make sure to come on down, smite some xenos, flame some heretics and plant your stamp on history (or the future I guess?) by proving your army claims this battlefield.

We look forward to seeing you all and to the many brutal, tactical games we're likely to see over the coming campaign.

The Emperor Protects,

Team Justplay.

Meet the Team, MTG Thomas Duffy

Ritchie McAlley

Introduce yourself for us, give us a little bit about yourself for the reader

My names Thomas, I have been playing Magic: The Gathering (MTG) since Born of the Gods way back in February 2014. This has been one of my biggest pass-times now for a couple of years and I love the game and play in most formats. I have a big collection of cards so I am able to play plenty of different decks and I’m always learning more about the game; either the rules themselves or older cards before I started. I've played completively now for about 2 years, which may seem a while but that's nothing compared to a few other players I have met on my travels.

What made you first get into card games?

I first got into Yu-Gi-Oh & Pokemon when I was a little kid and played the card games. When I started in my twenties I revisited the Yu-Gi-Oh card game as my friend showed me his old cards (I had and to this day still hold onto my old Dark Magician deck) so we started to play at home. We then later learned of a local game store who held competitions and we thought we should enter. After being destroyed by everyone (who were not polite or welcoming  if I'm completely honest) we decided not to go back and try again. We saw another person playing another card game though and started to become interested. Of course it was MTG and from then I was hooked on the game.

What drew you to them over some of the other hobbies out there like wargaming?

I have always been into gaming in general, either video games, wargaming or card games. I will play all sorts but the main game I will focus on is MTG as there are plenty of things I love about the game.

What is it that you love about Magic: The Gathering?

MTG is the one game that I can play for hours and not be bored because of all the different formats and different decks you can play. I also love the community, its very welcoming. The community will always help out a new player, whether teaching them the rules, or even giving cards that they need to build a deck. Most players will even work on ways to improve their deck or show them different decks they maybe interested in and I've made loads of new friends because of this game.

What’s been your most memorable experiences/ top finishes with the game

My top finish was only last weekend at GP Copenhagen; I went 11 wins to 4 losses putting me to 95th out of 1,815 players, which has given me 2 pro points. To do so well at such a large tournament was one of the achievements I've wanted for some time now. Another memorable experience was winning the Wigan PPTQ which qualifies me to take part in the RPTQ this weekend coming. It felt amazing and took me beating a very good and local player John Brogan (Sorry John :-D) in the finals.

Tom (right) in the game he mentioned vs John

Was there a particular deck, playset, or game that stood out?

I was playing in GP Copenhagen Eldrazi Tron, which has a few bad match ups against certain decks. I remember second round of day two and sitting down against Merfolk (which is a terrible match up for me), it was a very hard three matches and I had to play every step correctly to even have a chance to win, or else face being knocked out and missing out on pro points. I was able to win the match which made me believe that I could reach my goal.

Of all the cards you’ve collected are there any that have a special place in your heart?
Karn, Liberated without a doubt. This card was what got me into Modern, being able to bring this out turn 3 and watch people drop their faces is amazing.

An insane combo card, reliable tech or just a piece of cut art?

Reliable tech although I do love a good combo.

What’s it’s like being part of the Liverpool MTG community?

It’s great, I feel like everyone is like one big, weird family. Because of the community I have been able to grow as a player and also make new friends. I can’t stress enough how grateful I am to the game and the community. If anyone wants to get into this game I know everyone will welcome you with open arms.

Do you ever compete at events? If so what draws you to them?

I’m always competing at events, mainly PPTQ’s. The main reason like most people is to get onto the Pro tour (a distant Pipe Dream) but another thing I love is travelling with my friends to new places, meeting new people or even seeing the same faces event after event as a lot of people go to the same events as myself.

Tom basking in the Glory of his Game Day win!

If you had any advice for people looking to get into MTG, What would you tell them?

My advice would depend on what they want; if it’s just for fun then come down to JustPlay and if you want to learn the game I know a lot of people be happy to teach you. Even just to try a new deck or format, there is always something on in the community group. If you want to be completive, I will admit it costs a lot and you will not win a lot (I know better players than myself who don't win tournaments) but the only way to test yourself and improve is to keep trying and if you have a group of friends going with you then you can still have fun. I will always try to help anyone with anything in MTG and even if I don’t know I’ll point you in the right direction to speak to someone or find out myself.  As I said earlier I am always learning more about the game and will do hopefully for a long time. I hope to see you soon at either Tuesday Night Magic (TNM) or Friday Night Magic (FNM).

Thanks to Tom for taking the time to introduce himself and tell us about why he likes taking part in events for Team JustPlay.

We have lots more content coming up for and from the team, want to get involved and get featured on our website get in touch here or message us on Facebook

And most of all thanks to Tom and the rest of the team for spreading the word and wearing our colors up and down the country.

Ian & Ritchie

The Conflict on Espandor Rages On

Shaun Wright

The fires of destruction have raged across the continents of Espandor for the past two weeks in a swathe of bloody conflict between the forces of the imperium and the ruinous powers seeking it's downfall. The first two weeks of conflict saw incredible battles as the brave infantry of the Vostroyan Astra Militarum under Commander Mustang and his trusty War-Bear came to the defence of the planet and stoically took on all comers. Rumours of the secretive and mysterious Grey Knights were muttered across several conflict zones but reports are still varied about their motives. Whether seeking the retrieval of holy relics or simply appearing to bolster the Imperium and stamp out daemaonic incursions, only time will tell.

Skirmish conflicts on the eastern continent of Bartaros saw The Imperial Fists assaulted and harassed in several raids, with the marines of Dorn barely escaping a cunning trap layed out by a contingent of Chaos Space Marines but suffering heavy losses. It is said the apothecaries of the legion worked long and hard, but were unable to save many and several gene seeds were lost to the battlefield.

The terrifying forces of the VIII Legion Night Lords wrought a campaign of terror and destruction on the Adeptus Mechanicus cities of Kemlech and Dastan I, massacring swathes of civilians and imperial agents before the local PDF forces were able to force them back into hiding. Though they the planetary defence force fought valiantly, the Night Lords left the battlefield unscathed and imperial outposts are reporting increasing sabotage and vandalism on the outer reaches of the planet.

The Plains of Dust were host to the powerful might of the space wolves, looking to secure the planet's primary ammunition and arms production facilities. Though the sons of Fenris were beset for 9 standard units, they were not found wanting and the crucial assets remain under imperial rule. Finally seeing an opportunity to break the siege, the wolves pursued their Eldar attackers into a meat grinder but their aggression was only rewarded in Imperial blood. Swathes of young blood claw recruits were cut down before the powerful Incubi and the psychic might of the Farseers ran rampant.

Reports are flooding in and the Astropaths have informed the High Lords of Terra that the conflict is now moving to the northern continent of Equus. Whilst the land is habitable, vast expanses and harsh sandstorms mean the territory is home to the hardiest of the populace and several key Medicae facilities. If the planet is to hold the Imperium must face off all foes and maintain these key locations and war is coming. The destruction so far has been but a whisper before the escalating violence this new conflict will hold.

As we move on now this next two weeks of Warhammer 40,000 8th edition at JustPlay will be played at 1500 points as we add more forces and engage in bloodier conflicts. The fate of Espandor is still left in the balance and we can't wait to see who is left standing. Come down on Wednesday night at 6 pm to take part in our main 40k night and place your mark on the fate of Espandor.

Don't forget our armies on parade competition at the end of the 6 weeks were can win some store credit for even more 40k get your hobby on!

 Happy Wargaming,

Team JustPlay.

X-Wing Store Championship Report and Lists!

Ritchie McAlley

Last week we hosted 30 of the finest pilots around at our first ever X-Wing Store Championships. Thank you very much to everyone who made the effort to travel from the surrounding towns and cities and from other clubs such as Element and Harlequins.

With 5 rounds and top 4 cut the schedule for the day we had a lot of games on the cards and a tight cut to make the top 4 single elimination stage.

After 5 rounds we had one player on 5-0 and another 5 on 4-1 meaning two people would be missing out on MOV!

Commiserations to the two players just missing out!

We had a Team JustPlay member make the top 4! Mike Bennett would be representing us taking on Colm Browne in the Semi finals while Seb would face Colin.

I would also like to congratulate all the players that made the top 8 and won the acrylic range rulers.

Thumbs up everyone! or club people over the head..

Top 4 (left to right) Colm, Mike, Seb and Colin

You can check out the full standings and see all the Top 4 players lists here along with all the round pairings and any other information here.

In the Top 4 Team JustPlay member Mike was taking on Element Games own Colm. Mike flying Decimator and Quickdraw vs 5 A-Wings. Mike popped a A-Wing really early on but the game ended up with Mikes Decimator being backed into a corner on 2 hull points while defending himself against Colm's last remaining A-Wing on 1 HP! Three rounds of shooting seen Mike not be able to take advantage of his higher pilot skill and the A-Wings took the victory and on to the final!

The Top Four Doing Battle!

Once the other semi final game was finished we seen Seb Brady taking a break from his normal Y-Wings and playing 3 X-wing make it to the final for another all Rebel final and one involving actual X-Wings! Shame that was as far as it went as I am sure you all know by now nothing good stop Colm with a final record of 7-0 with his own favorite list which I believe he has put a lot of effort in to learning and playing great to see this pay off for him congratulations.

Our winner Colm Browne.
